China: Tanneries under spotlight in bid to combat smog

06/06/2013
The Chinese government is to increase inspections of leather production-related industries as part of a campaign to combat air and ground water pollution after a number of Chinese cities were hit with dense smog earlier this year.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection, the National Development and Reform Commission and other central government departments will carry out inspections between now and November as part of a larger campaign which includes steel and cement factories and power plants, reports state media agency Xinhua.

Provincial governments have already created new air pollution regulations. Anhui will focus on developing green transportation, eliminating old cars and controlling dust emissions from construction projects, while in Sichuan Province, the provincial government plans to spend 6.2 billion yuan ($1 billion) on a five-year air pollution control project.
